Berat Buzhala: A Dangerous Propagandist Threatening Kosovo's Democracy
Berat Buzhala's tweets reveal a hypocritical and dangerous agenda, aligning with an authoritarian Serbian regime and betraying Kosovo's sovereignty and the suffering endured under Milosevic.
In the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the United Kingdom swiftly banned pro-Russian stooges, recognizing the threat they posed to national security. Berat Buzhala, a self-proclaimed journalist, deserves a similar ban and a thorough investigation into the source of his questionable funding, which fuels his propaganda warfare aimed at dismantling Kosovo's institutions and democratic republic. Buzhala's activities can no longer be qualified as a matter of freedom of speech or expression; they are a calculated assault on Kosovo's sovereignty and national interests.
Buzhala's tweets reveal an alarming pattern of pro-Serbian propaganda that endangers Kosovo's national security and jeopardizes its hard-fought independence. His alignment with an authoritarian Serbian regime, led by President Aleksandar Vucic, betrays the suffering endured under the Milosevic regime—the very regime that committed heinous crimes and war crimes against humanity, which Vucic has justified and defended. Buzhala, shamelessly donning the cloak of journalism, is nothing more than a criminal impersonator taking advantage of our noble profession to advance Serbia's interests and Russian proxies within the Republic of Kosovo.
In the United Kingdom, Buzhala's accreditation as a journalist would be promptly revoked if he were even remotely qualified. Countless pieces of evidence indicate Buzhala's association with organized crime, which for decades has systematically caused destruction in our country. Shockingly, he has enabled and supported these criminal elements to maintain their grip on power, all under the guise of journalism. As an independent journalist, I find it my responsibility to assert that Buzhala should not be allowed to operate under the veil of journalism any longer. His criminal activities and deliberate misinformation campaigns pose a direct threat to our institutions, our national security, and our democratic values.
Analyzing Buzhala's tweets, it becomes evident that his editorial stance is riddled with distortion, self-righteousness, and hypocrisy. He shamelessly favors Serbia, dismissing the fact that Serbia remains aligned with the Kremlin, especially since signing a foreign policy agreement with Moscow in September 2022. Buzhala and his associate, Petrit Selimi, are actively working to repair Serbia's image within Kosovo, shamelessly promoting Serbia's agenda at the expense of our nation's interests.
Moreover, Buzhala's penchant for disseminating false information becomes apparent when he endorses Petrit Selimi's tweets without verifying their accuracy. It is deeply concerning that Buzhala disregards the importance of fact-checking, spreading baseless claims that only serve to further his dangerous narrative.
Buzhala's reckless behaviour continues as he wrongly attributes statements to Gabriel Escobar, sowing seeds of discord and perpetuating confusion among the public. Fabricating statements and disseminating false information is not the mark of a responsible journalist; it is the behaviour of a propagandist with ulterior motives.
The narrative Buzhala weaves around Prime Minister Kurti's actions and intentions are malicious and baseless. His persistent attempts to paint Kurti as irrational and a threat to Kosovo's future undermine the progress made by our nation and discredit the democratically elected leader. Buzhala's unwarranted personal attacks, comparing Kurti to a "loose cannon" and questioning his alliances, demonstrate a lack of journalistic integrity and professionalism.
Buzhala's attempts to invoke his own past experiences and the suffering endured by Kosovo's population under Serbian oppression are disingenuous and self-serving. While his experiences undoubtedly shaped his perspective, it is both hypocritical and dangerous to employ them to defend his support for an authoritarian Serbian president and his party. Buzhala's endorsement of a regime that historically suppressed and marginalized the Albanian population in Kosovo is a clear betrayal of the principles he claims to champion, namely the protection of minority rights.
By selectively invoking assistance received during the war, Buzhala attempts to manipulate the narrative and deflect from his own biases. He conveniently overlooks the critical role played by the United States and other allies in supporting the establishment of an independent Kosovo, instead using this assistance as a tool to gain credibility while simultaneously aligning himself with a Serbian regime that aligns with the Kremlin on foreign policy matters. This double standard is hypocritical and undermines the credibility of both Buzhala and his narratives.
Buzhala's pro-Serbian agenda is apparent in his endorsements of corrupt US envoys, Richard Grenell and Gabriel Escobar. The fact that Grenell is allegedly on the payroll of Serbia, as reported by credible sources and media outlets, raises serious questions about Buzhala's motives and potential ties to Serbian propaganda machinery. By disseminating their views without proper scrutiny, Buzhala undermines his own credibility and reinforces the perception that he is merely a mouthpiece for Serbia's interests.
In his relentless attacks on Prime Minister Kurti, Buzhala crosses all boundaries of decency and fairness. His baseless accusations and personal smears only serve to further a toxic narrative and undermine the stability and progress of Kosovo. By labelling Kurti the "most dangerous politician" and accusing him of endangering Kosovo's independence, Buzhala not only disrespects the will of the majority who elected Kurti but also undermines the efforts made to consolidate our young democracy.
It is imperative for Buzhala to recognize the immense harm his actions have caused to Kosovo's democratic institutions, national security, and the people he purports to represent. His biased reporting, selective historical narratives, and alignment with Serbian propaganda machinery betray the very foundations of journalism and democracy. It is time for Buzhala to reflect on the consequences of his actions, critically examine his biases, and adopt a more balanced and inclusive approach that upholds the principles of justice, equality, and respect for all communities in Kosovo.
Unmasking Berat Buzhala: The Threat to Kosovo's Democracy and National Security
Buzhala's lack of transparency regarding his funding sources raises serious concerns. It is essential to investigate the origin and nature of the financial support he receives to sustain his media activities. If his funding is traced back to questionable sources or foreign entities with vested interests, it would further confirm his role as a dangerous propagandist rather than an independent journalist.
According to the European Parliament report titled "Mapping Fake News and Disinformation in the Western Balkans and Identifying Ways to Effectively Counter Them" in 2021, Gazeta Express is mentioned on page 26 as one of the mainstream media outlets in Kosovo categorized as key disinformation channels. However, the report does not provide specific details or analysis about Gazeta Express. It is worth noting that Gazeta Express was co-founded and co-owned by Berat Buzhala, who now operates another outlet called NACIONALE. Despite Buzhala's claim of leaving Express, considering the level of credibility associated with him, there is no assurance that Buzhala has completely disassociated himself from Gazeta Express as he asserts.
Kosovo's democracy is still in its formative years, and it is vulnerable to external interference and manipulation. Buzhala's actions play directly into the hands of those who seek to undermine our nation's sovereignty and stability. His relentless attacks on Kosovo's institutions, leaders, and democratic values contribute to a climate of distrust and division, which ultimately weakens our collective progress.
To protect the integrity of our democracy and safeguard our national interests, it is imperative that authorities thoroughly investigate Buzhala's activities and potential connections to organized crime and foreign entities. This investigation should include a comprehensive analysis of his financial transactions, interactions with Serbian officials and intelligence agencies, and his overall role in perpetuating disinformation campaigns.
Furthermore, it is crucial for the public to be discerning and critical of the information they consume. We must actively seek out reliable sources and fact-check claims made by individuals like Buzhala, who have repeatedly demonstrated a disregard for truth and a willingness to manipulate narratives for personal gain.
Berat Buzhala's betrayal of Kosovo's democracy is evident through his alignment with Serbian propaganda, dissemination of false information, and attacks on our democratic institutions and leaders. His actions pose a direct threat to our national security, sovereignty, and hard-fought independence. It is essential for authorities and the public to recognize his dangerous agenda, thoroughly investigate his activities, and take appropriate measures to protect Kosovo's democracy from his corrosive influence.
